Fleur Royale, a novelette

A novelette is a curious creature. It's too long to be a short story and too short to be a novella. I'm delighted to have my new novelette, Fleur Royale, available for Kindle and in Paperback at Amazon . I'll have signed author copies in my Etsy store in a couple of weeks. Thanks for any and all support!

"Solarized Pinhole Heads" in Exist Otherwise, Issue #8

My "Solarized Pinhole Series" began with taking photographs with a lensless camera then manipulating the images with a digital filter. This process is similar to the one I performed in the darkroom. The results are an interesting blend of old and new technology while eliminating the strong chemicals. I'm delighted to have one from this series in Issue #8 of Exist Otherwise .

An Adventure from Afar: a review of "Baja Journey" by Maxine Pearlman

"Reading Baja Journey " 2023 Kristin Fouquet I’ve been friends with Ingrid Lucia, Pearlman’s daughter, for over twenty years. Knowing of Ingrid’s unconventional upbringing, I was intrigued to gain more insight into her origin story. My chance came when I acquired Pearlman’s memoir,  Baja Journey . I opened the book a day after returning from Puerto Vallarta, the magic and mystery fresh in my mind, and was delighted that Pearlman’s expedition began in Mexico. Far from the circumstances of my recent getaway, hers began with hitchhiking through Baja in the late 1960s.   She chronicles her travels throughout Mexico, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Southwestern deserts, New York, and New Orleans. Some of these are with just David, Ingrid’s father, and others with a group of travelers. Children, including Ingrid, are born along the way. Yet, this is much more than a travelogue. The exploration of her adventure extends far beyond the locales and even beyond the lifespan of her relat...

Small Solace

Christy Lorio let us all know she was going to die. We never met in person, but we followed one another on Twitter. She was also a writer and photographer in New Orleans. We often congratulated each other on artistic accomplishments. Anyone who followed her was aware of her stage-IV colorectal cancer. Christy had survived it for over four years, but then in August, she was struck with the prognosis of only six months left to live. She passed away on November 29, 2022. The first story I read about cancer was "I Want to Live" by Thom Jones. It was visceral in detailing a woman's treacherous battle from cancer diagnosis to her inevitable death. I didn't seek out this wretched tale; it was included in Gotham Writers' Workshop Fiction Gallery . It shocked and haunted me, but it was fiction . I did seek out Christy Lorio's  Cold Comfort  (Belle Point Press, 2022). It is a collection of fourteen nonfiction essays with stark b&w companion photograph...
